Depression screenings to be held at hospital Mental health professionals from Saint Barnabas Behavioral Health Center will offer the general community the opportunity to learn about the signs and symptoms of depression, and to participate in a free confidential screening as part of National Depression Screening Day on Oct. 9. This free program will be held at Saint Barnabas Behavioral Health Center, 1691 Highway 9, Toms River. Screening hours have been scheduled from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8:00 p.m. National Depression Screening Day is designed to call attention to depression problems on a national level and educate the public regarding symptoms of depression. Fall Jersey Shore Gospel Music Series to begin The sixth annual Jersey Shore Gospel Music Series will begin with the first fall concert by Dave McIntosh, of Egg Harbor, on Oct. 4 at 7:15 p.m. at the Francis Asbury Manor Chapel at 70 Stockton Ave. in Ocean Grove. Dave Siefert, of Touch of the World Ministries, will present a gospel magician program Nov. 1 at 7:15 p.m. Three Bible conferences have been planned for Friday nights in November and for March and May 2004. There will be special music groups each night of the series. Concerts and programs are scheduled each month from October through May, sponsored by the Jersey Shore Gospel Music Fellowship, founded for the promotion of enthusiastic gospel music and education programs. Veterinarian to discuss illnesses in aging pets Just as in the case with humans, scientific advances have extended the life span of most pets as well. As a result of these advances, there are many common illnesses that aging pets can develop. Treatments exist today that did not exist a few years ago. Recognizing the signs and symptoms of common illnesses, and knowing the treatment options can help pet owners to keep their animals healthy, happy and active. Community Medical Center’s Lighthouse at Toms River will host the lecture "Common Illnesses in Aging Pets," presented by veterinarian Todd E. Werkmeister, D.V.M., of Small Animal Veterinary Associates, on Oct. 8 at 10 a.m. The Lighthouse in Toms River is located in the Cory Building, 599 Highway 37 west. Autumn Flea Market fund-raiser at Allaire Allaire Village Inc. is hosting its Autumn Flea Market as a fund-raiser Oct. 11 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Show Field at the Historic Village at Allaire in Allaire State Park, Route 524, Wall. Admission to the flea market will be $1 per adult. Children under 12 and accompanied by an adult will be admitted free. More than 125 vendors will display old, new and hand-made items of all types. In the case of inclement weather the event will take place Oct. 12. Dealers may only participate by paid registration in advance. The fee for a 20-by-20 foot space is $25. Senior Doubles Tennis program in Lakewood The Ocean County Parks and Recreation Department will conduct a Senior Doubles Tennis program on Wednesdays from Oct. 8-29. The event will run from 10:30 a.m. to noon and will be held at Ocean County Park, Route 88 in Lakewood. Single players are welcome to attend.
