Memorial’s swimmers prepare for county meet

Matt Stillwagon and Scott Thompson are closing in on school records for Brick Memorial’s boys swimming team. And coach Don McCarrick hopes the record setting happens Saturday when the Ocean County championships will be held at the Ocean County YMCA. Starting time is at 2 p.m.

The girls championship meet is Friday night.

"Matt and Scott could go in the top 10 in their events. So could Rob Bowne in the breaststroke," said McCarrick.

His team this year is swimming without Tim Conway, who has graduated and gone on to the University of Maryland-Baltimore County. A year ago Conway helped Brick Memorial to its best finish in many years — a fourth place. Conway set a meet record in the 50 freestyle and won the 100 to win Swimmer of the Meet honors.

Although the Mustangs lack the depth to seriously challenge for the boys title, they have some competitive individuals as Stillwagon is just off the 1:00 school record in the 100 butterfly with a 1:01.5 personal best this season.

Thompson’s 5:33 in the 500 is under a minute off the record. Both their efforts have helped the Mustangs win three of eight dual meets in the keenly competitive Shore Conference.

A number of freshmen have done well, including Nick Pole as a sprinter and on relays, Brian Daly as a sprinter and breaststroker and Matt Vaughn in a number of events, including the individual medley, butterfly and breaststroke.
