SMART bill workshops scheduled in September

The Ocean County Library system will be hosting two workshops on property tax reform sponsored by the New Jersey Coalition for Property Tax Reform. The coalition is a statewide, independent, grassroots organization whose goal is to reform property tax in New Jersey.

The first workshop will be held Sept. 18, 7-9 p.m. at the Brick branch of the Ocean County Library. The second workshop will be held Sept. 20, 10 a.m. to noon at the Toms River branch of the Ocean County Library on Washington Street.

The workshop will focus on the coalition’s SMART (Save Money and Reform Taxes) bill and how it can reduce taxes for over 90 percent of New Jersey taxpayers. Worksheets will be distributed to each participant to compute their tax savings based on the SMART bill formula.

Participants also will be able to ask question and learn what they can do to help lower property taxes.

According to the coalition, the SMART bill has already been endorsed by municipalities representing tens of thousands of voters statewide, including the Shore communities of Brick, Point Pleasant, Berkeley, Keyport, Spring Lake Heights, Matawan, Englishtown and Barnegat. The bill also has been endorsed by the New Jersey League of Women Voters. The coalition’s Web site is www.reformschooltaxes.com. Details: (732) 892-0815.
