Governor’s legacy is one of shame Former Gov. McGreevey’s departure was long overdue. McGreevey brought shame and ridicule upon the office of governor and betrayed those who voted for him. He has broken the backs of the hardworking people of New Jersey with the largest tax and fee hikes in the state in over a decade. He has recklessly squandered our hard-earned tax dollars on ridiculous advertisements touting his alleged accomplishments as governor, in a bid to get taxpayer-sponsored publicity for the gubernatorial campaign he had been planning for 2005. What a colossal waste that was! He lined the pockets of his pay-to-play cronies with tax dollars at a time when a deficit loomed large in the future and property taxes are spiraling out of control. Not since Tammany Hall has there been such an egregious display of public corruption! Then to add insult to injury, he mortgaged our future and put the state of New Jersey even deeper in debt by floating junk bonds to support his outrageous and reckless spending. The final parting insult, staying in office until Nov. 15, has deprived the people of New Jersey of the right to select our own governor. McGreevey’s legacy is one of shame and corruption. He is a blight on the Democratic Party, and an embarrassment to the people of the state of New Jersey. The task of cleaning up the wreckage strewn in McGreevey’s wake is a daunting one. I only hope that our next governor is up to the task.
