Accident leaves man in critical condition

BRICK — A township resident involved in a motor vehicle accident Monday morning was still in critical condition that same evening, Ocean Medical Center officials said.

Fred P. Leiner, 80, was found unconscious in his 1993 Chevrolet Blazer after he struck a utility pole on Route 88 at 7:47 a.m. Monday, police said.

According to police reports, Leiner was traveling east on Route 88 when he left the roadway, entered the shoulder and then drove off the road near Kenneth Place. The vehicle continued east on Route 88, crossing Kenneth Place, impacting the curb and continuing onto the grassy area in front of a Route 88 residence. Here, the vehicle impacted the utility pole and came to rest, police said.

Off-duty Brick Township police officer George Collins was the first on the scene. Leiner was unconscious and unresponsive at the time, police reports said.

Leiner was transported to Ocean Medical Center by Alert Ambulance Service and MONOC Paramedics. His conditions were still critical as of 5 p.m. Monday.

Brick Township Police Officer Jeff Lindquist, of the Traffic Safety Unit, is conducting an investigation of the accident.
