      Friendly Sons of St. Patrick scholarships

      Thirteen Shore area high school seniors were each awarded $1,000 scholarships by the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of the Jersey Shore during an awards dinner honoring their academic achievement.

      The students were selected from among more than 200 scholarship applications that were reviewed by the organization’s scholarship committee, said Brother Peter Mannion, committee

      chairman.

      Students, their parents and members of the board of directors of the Friendly Sons participated in the awards ceremony at Doolan’s Restaurant, in Spring Lake.

      The local scholarship recipients are Elizabeth Connelly, of Brick, Brick Township High School; Collin D’Anna, of Howell, Howell High School; and Jillian Sullivan, of Brick, St. Rose High School.

      Blood drive to benefit Jackson 6-year-old

      A blood drive will be held July 15 for Lexie Braue, a six-year-old, Jackson resident who is blood transfusion dependent. She was diagnosed, as an infant, with Diamond Black Fan Anemia, a blood disorder, where the body does not produce its own red blood cells.

      The blood drive will be held at the Jackson Elks Lodge, 1059 East Veterans Highway. Donors must be at least 17 years old, in good health, weigh at least 110 pounds and present a signature or photo ID. Walk-ins are welcome.

      Summer Crafters’ Market at Allaire State Park

      A summer Crafters’ Market will be held July 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the grounds of the Historic Village at Allaire in Allaire State Park, Route 524, Wall Township. Admission to the park is $5 per car. The event will feature exhibits and demonstrations by over 125 area crafts people and artisans with museum quality pieces, country crafts, handicrafts, and home made “bric-a-brac.” Food and beverage service will be available. The rain date will be July 17. The event is a fund-raiser to benefit the historic and educational programs presented by the nonprofit organization, Allaire Village Inc., at the Historic Village at Allaire.       Autoimmune Information Network support groups

      The Myasthenia Gravis Support group meets the third Sunday of the month The next meetings will take place July 17 (a guest speaker will be featured), Aug. 21, Sept. 18, Oct. 16, Nov. 20 and Dec. 18). An Encompassing Autoimmunity Support Group for any person with any of the 85 known autoimmune conditions meets the fourth Sunday of every month (July 24, Aug, 28, Sept. 25, Oct. 23, Nov. 23). There will be no December meeting. Both groups will meet at Ocean Medical Center, Brick, in the hospital’s community classroom at 1 p.m.

      ‘Great Train Robbery’ on the Pine Creek Railroad

      “The Great Train Robbery” will be held July 16 and 17 from noon to 6 p.m. on the Pine Creek Railroad at Allaire State Park, Route 524, Wall Township.

      Train fare is $5 per person and trains will depart every 45 minutes. Allaire State Park charges a $5 per car parking fee during summer weekends.

      All proceeds from this event benefit the ongoing restoration work of the all-volunteer nonprofit organization.

      Herbertsville Fire Co. Flea Market Extravaganza

      Herbertsville Fire Company, 601 Herbertsville Road, Brick, will host a “Flea Market Extravaganza” July 23 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. A large variety of merchandise will be available in addition to food. Spaces may be rented for a fee of $15 each. A limited number of tables are available for an additional $5. Call (732) 458-9164, ext. 12, by July 16 for details and to reserve a space.

      Coast Guard Aux. hosts one day boating courses

      The members of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 1601 will hold several one-day America’s Boating Courses at the following locations and dates:

      • July 16, Ocean Fire House, Arnold Avenue, Point Pleasant.

      • Aug. 27, Brick Township Recreation Center, 780 Chambers Bridge Road, Brick.

      • Sept. 24, Herbertsville Fire House, Herbertsville Road, Brick.

      • Oct. 22, Ocean Fire House, Arnold Avenue, Point Pleasant.

      All classes will start at 7 a.m. and end approximately at 5 p.m. The registration cost is $55 and will include lunch. Completion of this course will satisfy the state requirements for a boating certificate. Mail checks to David Clark FSO/PE, 160 Berkeley Drive, Brick 08724.
