National 11s off to solid start in pool play

Even after two sharp pool-play victories in District 18, Brick National 11-year-olds All-Stars manager Tom Merrill is not completely satisfied.

“They still need a lot of work on their hitting,” said Merrill after Brick National beat Toms River East National, 2-0, and Berkeley, 12-4, over the weekend to go to 3-0 in pool play. “The defense is okay. They haven’t worked to their full potential yet.”

Scott Hurley held Toms River East National to four hits, while a groundout in the fourth inning and Tom Winters’ base hit in the fifth brought in the two runs. Brick National had five hits.

John Kizmann scattered six Berkeley hits, with seven strikeouts and one walk, and helped his own cause by lining a run-scoring double. Bill Berg smashed a two-run double, and James Egleston had two hits and an RBI. Casey McLeod and Ryan Meyer drove in runs.

Brick National played at Manchester on Tuesday evening in its final game of pool play.
