      August programs and events at Brick Library

      The Brick Branch of the Ocean County Library, 301 Chambers Bridge Road, Brick, will be hosting the following programs during the month of August.       • Aug. 1, “Going to the Dogs,” 1 p.m., ages 6 and up.

      • Aug. 1, “Dragon” in Chinese, 2:30 p.m., for families.

      • Aug. 1, Mother/Daughter Book Club, 7 p.m., for teen girls ages 10-14. New members welcome. “Friction” by E.R. Frank will be discussed.

      • Aug. 2, “Kit’s Kaboodle,” 11 a.m. Interactive Theater Show for ages 5 and up.

      • Aug. 3, “Sweet Dreams Story Time,” 7 p.m., ages 2 and up. No registration needed.

      • Aug. 4, Arline Wasserman’s Book Discussion, 10 a.m. “Stolen Lives,” by Malika Oufkir, will be discussed.

      • Aug. 6, “Bewitching Belly Dancing,” 2 p.m. Performed by Ashtar, of Brick’s Tribal Dance Arts. Refreshments will be served.

      • Aug. 11, “Big Kids Small Kids,” 10:30 a.m. Story time for ages 6 and up.

      • Aug. 11, “Welcome Back, Harry!” 2:30 p.m., “Harry and the Half-Blood Prince” will be discussed. For ages 9 and up.

      • Aug. 13, “Fabulous Football Drop-in Craft,” 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., for all ages. No registration necessary.

      • Aug. 13, “Girl Scouts’ Read to Lead Adventure,” 10-11:30 a.m., for ages 4-5.

      • Aug. 15, “Girl Scout’s Read to Lead Adventure,” 6-7:30 p.m., for ages 4-5.

      • Aug. 16, Free blood pressure screening, 9-11 a.m. Provided by the Ocean County Health Department. No appointment is needed.

      • Aug. 16, “Going to the Dogs,” 1 p.m., for ages 6 and up.

      • “Game Night on the Lawn,” 7 p.m. Board games on the library’s lawn. All ages welcome. Refreshments will be served. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held indoors. For ages 6 and up.

      • Aug.. 17, “Sweet Dreams Story Time,” 7 p.m., for ages 2 and up. No appointment needed.

      • Aug. 18, “Lady Lollipop” Bookworm Club, 10:30 a.m., for ages 6 and up.

      • Aug. 20, “Creative Card Making,” 11 a.m. Taught by Lois Folla.

      • Aug. 20, “Presenting “Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein,’ ” 2 p.m. A showing of the 1994 film directed by Kenneth Branagh, starring Robert DeNiro. Discussion will follow led by Mary Ellen Carr and Dan Baker of Ocean County College.

      • Aug. 23, “Professor Sprout’s Herbology Class,” 2:30 p.m., for ages 9 and up.

      • Aug. 23, “The ABC’s of Managing Stress,” 7 p.m.

      • Aug. 25, “Medieval Faire,” 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Summer reading grand finale celebration for families.

      ‘Cinderella’ to be performed at Strand

      The Strand Theater, in collaboration with the Garden State Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, will present the fairy tale “Cinderella,” with music by Rodgers and Hammerstein performed by the newly formed community youth theater ensemble. The Garden State Youth Orchestra will accompany the show. Performances will take place Aug. 12 and 13 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., and Aug. 14 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 with discounts for seniors, students and children.       Baseball author to visit

      BlueClaws stadium

      The Lakewood BlueClaws will welcome Mark Leinweaver, author of “Minor Moments, Major Memories,” July 29 at FirstEnergy Park, Lakewood, when the BlueClaws take on the Greensboro Grasshoppers, the Single-A affiliate of the Florida Marlins. Game time is 7:05 p.m. Fireworks will follow the game, which will be provided courtesy of Toyota World/ Scion World of Lakewood.

      The book features individuals from today’s major league all-stars to minor league journeymen. Some of the major league stars highlighted include Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Gary Sheffield and Mike Piazza.

      Leinweaver will sign copies of his new book from 7-8 p.m. and share additional stories with fans about his research. Copies of the book will be on sale at the autograph table, on the concourse behind home plate, and in the ClawsCove store.

      Volunteers sought

      for cleanup of park

      Volunteers are needed for a cleanup at Riverwood Park, off Whitesville Road (Route 527) at Riverwood Drive, in Toms River, July 30 from 9 a.m. to noon.

      The cleanup is sponsored by the Barnegat Bay Watershed and Estuary Foundation and New Jersey Community Waterwatch, in cooperation with Dover Township Department of Parks and Recreation and Environmental Commission, along with the Ocean County Landfill.

      The cleanup will be held rain or shine. Gloves, hats, insect repellent and long pants are recommended. Bring a rake and implements for fetching debris out of the woods and river. Details: (609) 698-7643.
