Brick to host Shore Conference track championships once again

Brick Township so expertly ran the Shore Conference outdoor track and field championships last spring (which the school hosted for the first time in 20 years) that the association decided to have them at Brick Township again this year.

Over 30 schools from Ocean and Monmouth counties will send boys and girls teams to the meet May 20-21.

“We wouldn’t even have this if not for the grounds guys, led by Fred Testa,” said Bill Bruno, athletic director. “I’m confident we’ll have a very good meet with the competition and our preparation to host it.”

Last year’s meet saw an exciting new state record set in the pole vault.

Bruno also credited the work of Margaret Redden, who works in the Brick Township Athletic Office, for organizing a band of volunteers last spring, which she’ll do again this year to help with everything from food for the fans to water for the athletes, and help with keeping statistics. Brick Memorial again is expected to supply the hurdles.

What also helps is that Bruno, starting his third year as athletic director this month, has been Shore Conference chairman of track and field for the past 17 years. And he recently was elected as president of the Shore Conference, starting in June.

Bruno admitted, however, that Brick Township may not host the Ocean County championships as it did last spring, also for the first time in 20 years.

Although the school is in consideration, so is the new athletic facility at Barnegat.

“It looks like that will be the host site for this year, although it’s not yet official,” Bruno said.

County meet postponed

Snowy weather forced postponement of the Ocean County Relays indoor championships to Feb. 12 at the Jersey City Armory. The individual indoor championships are scheduled a week earlier at the same site.

Coaches considered

Bill Bruno, athletic director for both high schools in Brick Township, said the interview process is under way, and a decision will be rendered by the end of the month for new Brick Memorial girls lacrosse and boys outdoor track and field head coaches.
