Army chaplain to talk about serving in Iraq

  • The Rev. Mark Farnham, chaplain at the Ocean Medical Center, Brick, will be the guest speaker at the First Baptist Church of Laurelton, 1824 Highway 88 east, Brick, May 29 at 10 a.m. Farnham, who recently returned from Iraq, will share his experiences as an Army chaplain.     Historical society seeks

    quilters for festival

    Spaces are still available for quilters to show and sell their quilted items at the Old Wall Historical Society’s third annual Schoolhouse Festival of Quilts.

    The outdoor festival will be held June 5 (rain date June 12), 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Allgor-Barkalow Homestead and Blansingburg Schoolhouse museums, 1701 New Bedford Road, between Route 138 and Belmar Boulevard in Wall Township.

    The event will feature the traditional showing and judging of quilts, as well as quilt supplies, quilting demonstrations, lectures, appraisals, and the sale of large and small quilted art. Only quilted items, such as bed quilts, quilt tops, wall hangings and tops, doll and crib quilts, boutique items, dining table items, quilted apparel, pillows and handbags, will be accepted for sale; no imported quilts will be permitted. The fee to rent a 9-by-12-foot space is $35, and the deadline is May 31. For more information, call Lena Pryor (732) 681-1110.

    ‘Playground Pals’ to meet at Ocean County Park

    The Ocean County Parks and Recreation Department will conduct a “Playground Pals” class this summer at Ocean County park, Route 88, in Lakewood. The program is open to all children ages 3-5, and consists of an hour of playground play and a sport craft for kids and parents. Playground pals will meet Thursdays from June 2 to 23 from 11 a.m. to noon. The cost is $12 per child.

    Fire company to host

    golf outing on June 13

    Pioneer Hose Fire Company No. 1, Brick, will sponsor the Sixth Annual Tom Giannattasio Jr. Memorial Golf Outing June 13 at Battleground Country Club in Manalapan. Proceeds will assist firefighters and emergency medical services personnel who are struggling with financial hardships that accompany medical conditions. It also will benefit heart transplant patients whose pharmacy and medical bills go beyond most of their resources.

    The cost to attend is $110 per player if registered by May 30, and $125 after May 30. The fee includes golf cart, lunch, dinner, driving range, refreshments and prizes. The event will begin at 1:30 p.m. with a shotgun start. Call (732) 477-8959 for details and entry forms.

    Jersey Shore Canoe and Kayak Fair June 4

    The Jersey Shore Canoe and Kayak Fair will be held June 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Ocean County Park, Route 88, in Lakewood. The event will feature over 100 models of canoes and kayaks available to test paddle and purchase for adults and children, in addition to dozens of paddling clubs and manufacturers.     Brick Historical Society to meet June 14

    The Brick Township Historical Society will hold its next meeting June 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the Herbertsville Firehouse, 601 Herbertsville Road, Brick. Jim Majoros, president of the Ocean County Coin Club will speak about the organization and his collection of coins and currency.

    Butterfly Garden to

    celebrate grand opening

    The grand opening of the Butterfly Garden at Cattus Island County Park, Toms River, will be June 5 from noon to 3 p.m.

    After 25 years, the Cooper Environmental Center and surrounding park are still growing. The center’s butterfly garden is finally completed. The plants grew vigorously over the summer and were fed upon by both adult and larval butterflies.

    The official opening gala will include music, refreshments, a butterfly walk, programs on starting your own butterfly garden, and staff volunteers on hand to answer questions. The celebration is free and open to people of all ages. No preregistration is necessary. Reasonable assistance and accommodations are available with prior notice. Details: (732) 270-6960.

    Golf outing fund-raiser to benefit Dottie’s House

    The state’s only long-term, full service residential housing facility for domestic violence survivors and their children will hold its major fund-raiser June 2 in the form of a golf outing at Eagle Ridge Golf Club in Lakewood.

    Dottie’s House, located in Brick, consists of eight two- and three- bedroom apartments where mothers and their children are provided with a host of services aimed at easing their path back to self-sufficiency. Services offered are job training and placement, group counseling, art therapy, parenting classes, financial management, nutrition advice, legal advocacy and day care.

    A nonprofit organization, Dottie’s House depends on funding through grants, foundations, and fund-raising events including the sixth annual Dottie’s House (sea Shelter) Golf Classic.

    The $225 event ($75) for dinner only, will feature lunch, a 1 p.m. shotgun start, a cocktail hour, and a dinner and awards reception. Prizes will include a 2005 Mercedes Benz, a 2005 Chevrolet Corvette, a 2005 Water Craft from Brick’s Atlantic Polaris and a 2005 Jayco Escapade 23-foot motor home.

    A silent auction and a live auction will be the highlight of the evening. Included among the auction items are various sports memorabilia, golf packages, a dinner a month from local restaurants, a fishing package, a trip to a Broadway play, and many others.     St. Martha’s Council of the Knights of Columbus will hold its annual indoor flea market and craft show June 26 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. Martha’s Church, Herbertsville Road, Point Pleasant.
