School board holds off on contract approvals
Kight assigns committee appointments
BY COLLEEN LUTOLF
Staff Writer

BRICK - Almost a month after its reorganization meeting, the Board of Education has not approved or renewed three annual contracts for the 2006-07 school year, due to continued information gathering by board members.

The contracts would name Wachovia, PNC and OceanFirst as depositories of record for the district's various fund accounts; appoint Carmen J. Memoli, Toms River, as treasurer of school funds; and appoint Commerce Insurance Services (CIS) as the district's health insurance broker. The current contracts do not expire until July 1.

The health insurance broker appointment is a no-bid contract that would cost the district $8,000 per month with a total cost not to exceed $96,000, according to the tabled resolution.

The board voted unanimously at its May 17 meeting to table the three contracts.

Business and finance chairman John Talty and school Business Administrator Nicholas Puleio are gathering additional information regarding the depositories of record, board President Sharon Kight said.

The board was also awaiting correspondence regarding the treasurer's position.

The resolution appointing CIS as the district's broker was held because of a "couple of incidental words" in the contract, Kight said. "We'd like to check it out before we approve the resolution."

The board also voted to approve the eight remaining resolutions that board members voted to table at its May 8 meeting that included appointing Cindy Doyle as district attendance officer, Puleio as public contracts compliance officer, and petty cash allocations for each of the district's schools for the upcoming school year.

Kight also appointed committees for the 2006-07 school year.

Kight sits on every committee and also serves as board liaison to the Brick Township Chamber of Commerce and as the liaison to Mayor Joseph C. Scarpelli and the Township Council.

The committee appointments are: athletics, Daniel Rosa (chair) and Dr. Allen Atheras; buildings and grounds, Frank Pannucci Sr. (chair) and Cynthia McCarthy; business and finance, Talty (chair) and Atheras; curriculum and instruction, Atheras (chair) and McCarthy; educational funding, Rosa (chair) and Atheras; negotiations, Talty (chair) and Rosa; personnel, Brian DeLuca (chair) and Talty; policy, McCarthy (chair) and DeLuca; senior liaison, Pannucci (chair) and Talty; and transportation, Talty (chair) and DeLuca.

Kight and Pannucci are also serving as the board's New Jersey School Boards Association delegates.
