Sports Shorts Despite a determined effort from Brick's Andrew Perez, Jersey Shore Boca Under 23s bid for the Mid-Atlantic Summer Showcase League was halted in the semifinals of the league tournament. Perez assisted the only goal of the game on a beautiful 20-yard feed as Boca edged the Golden Hawks of the New Jersey Rangers (Denville), 1-0, in the quarterfinals. Perez, who has excelled at LaSalle University, scored to pull Boca to 2-1 before West Chester (Pa.) held on to the 2-1 semifinal victory. It was the fourth goal of the season for Perez. Boca finished 16-5-1.
Brick National Little League will hold a spaghetti dinner benefit to purchase furniture for the family of Senior League player Kurt Lopftus, whose house burned down recently. The benefit takes place on Sunday at the Aurora Park First Aid station in Brick, with three seatings at 2 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children up to age 14 and any child 5 and under is admitted free. The Twin County Soccer Association U-9 Bad Boys MOSA-level travel team (no residency restrictions) seeks players born between Aug. 1, 1997 and July 31, 1998.
