Drunken driving a factor in fatal crash last month BY PATRICIA A. MILLER Staff Writer
BRICK TOWNSHIP - Police have charged an 18-year-old township woman with vehicular homicide and drunken driving in an accident that took the life of a local man recently.
Nicole E. Donnelly was arrested Nov. 7, three weeks after the crash that killed Walter W. Schaumberg, 37, also of Brick.
She was lodged in the Ocean County jail in lieu of $200,000 bail, with no 10 percent option. She was also charged with underaged driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and failure to maintain lane, authorities said.
Police also arrested Jorge M. Almeida, 30, Brick, a passenger in the car, and charged him with obstructing administration of the law, false swearing, purchasing alcohol for a person under the legal age and allowing an individual to operate a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
Almeida's bail was set at $25,000, with no 10 percent option. He was arrested and taken to the Ocean County jail the same day Donnelly was arrested, authorities said.
Schaumberg was traveling northbound in a Mazda MPV van on Burrsville Road just north of Patriot Avenue when the accident occurred at 11:04 p.m. on Oct. 16. A Volkswagen Cabriolet driven by Donnelly crossed over the southbound lane of the roadway's yellow line and into the northbound lane, where it struck the van. The impact sent Schaumberg's car counterclockwise onto the southbound roadside, where it struck a tree, authorities said.
Donnelly was pronounced dead at the scene by Assistant Ocean County Medical Examiner Joseph E. Domanski. Donnelly was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, by MONOC paramedics for a leg injury, police said.
The investigation was conducted by Officer Jeffrey Lindquist and Sgt. Donald Ling of the Brick Township Police Traffic Safety Unit. They were assisted by Lt. John Mount and Investigator John Hill of the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office Vehicular Homicide Unit.
