Gale E. Maynard, 61, was traveling west on Winding River Road near Herbertsville Road when the accident happened at 1:04 p.m., police said. Maynard failed to stop at a stop sign and entered Herbertsville Road. She then crossed over the northbound land, entered the southbound lane and struck the 2005 Ford Crown Victoria driven by Patrolman Thomas Smith Jr., 57. Smith was traveling south on Herbertsville Road, in the area of Windcrest Court, police said. Maynard, who was wearing an approved helmet, was ejected from the motorcycle and suffered multiple leg fractures and head lacerations. She was transported to the trauma unit at Jersey Shore Medical Center. The accident is under investigation by Patrolman Jeffrey Lindquist and Sgt. Donald Ling of the police department’s traffic safety unit.
