      'Well, if you believe that, then I have a bridge to sell you.'
            For years people have been repeating this phrase to gullible individuals to let them know when they have fallen for some unbelievable tale or a scammer's lies. We usually laugh when that phrase is said, since it usually follows some claim that is so absurd, that we actually feel bad for those who believe it.

      Designation of Toms River as Category One waterway
            The League of Women Voters of Ocean County would like to inform Ocean County citizens that Governor Corzine and Commissioner Lisa Jackson of the N.J. Department of Environment (DEP) have been petitioned to designate Toms River as a Category One waterway. This designation is among the highest level of protection that the state provides and requires a 300-foot buffer along the banks.

      Evict animals not people
            Recently, I read in the news that a pine snake has snagged the Toms River Super Wal-Mart application. Previously, I have read that other buildings, stores and homes have not been built because of snakes, frogs, turtles, etc.

      Support urged for bill to prevent horse slaughter
            Anyone who has ever loved a pet or admired a beautiful animal mourned the loss of Kentucky Derby champion Barbaro, who lost his valiant battle on Jan. 29. But other horses are still suffering and they don't have loving owners to watch over them. More than 100,000 are hauled across the country each year and cruelly slaughtered for human consumption overseas.

      Attention must be paid to problem of youth violence
            Christine Grimaldi's article ("Parents' support enlisted in battle against gangs," Tri-Town News, Jan. 18) brought to light an important and growing issue of concern to Jackson residents. Gangs, and more importantly, the youth violence that results from the influence of gang culture, are public health issues that affect everyone in the community.
