      Brick bowling teams get off to slow starts
      Both high school teams shoot poorly in early season matches
            It was an inauspicious start for perennially powers Brick Memorial and Brick Township boys bowling teams in the Bishop Ahr Tournament at Carolier Lanes in East Brunswick on Saturday, but both coaches remain optimistic for what lies ahead for this season.

      Coach feels this is his best team in many years
            John Battista, who moved down a weight class for Brick Township's wrestling team, is eager for a shot at returning to the NJSIAA Tournament as a senior this year. "I like this weight class better. I'm not the tallest guy in the world," joked the 5- feet, 10-inch Battista, who moves down to 189 pounds from 215 pounds where the defending District 23 champion finished 33-5.

            Vin Favia at 122 pounds snapped a 33- 33 tie with a decision and Brick Mat Rats I went on to sweep its remaining weight classes over Toms River, 58-33, in their Jersey Shore Junior Wrestling League opener on Saturday.

            Girls basketball teams at Brick Memorial and Brick Township draw many comparisons to each other as they prepare for the opening of the season next weekend. Both won six games and finished strongly with young teams, with Brick Township winning all of its games at the end.

      Not many keepers along Jersey coastline
            Where are the keepers? Another week has passed with solid numbers of bass caught along the coast. Anglers are playing catch and release in double-digits with bass just under 28 inches. Keepers are hard to come by so far. Capt. Greg on the Golden Eagle fished from Long Branch to Sea Bright and produced plenty of short stripers with a mix of some big bluefish.
