Obituaries

Anthony M. Donofrio

Mr. Donofrio, 88, of Ocean Grove, formerly of Brick, died Jan. 29, 2007, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. Born in Jersey City, he had lived in East Rutherford before moving to Brick 30 years ago. He was a demographics specialist for the Ocean County Planning Board. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was also a member of Brick Elks Lodge No. 2151 and the Brick Township Board of Education. Mr. Donofrio was predeceased by his wife, Marie, as well as three sisters, Kitty, Frances and Rose, and a brother, Michael. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Jan Donofrio of Wall Township, and Steve and Barbara Donofrio of Green Pond, Morris County; a daughter, Roselyn Callahan of Provincetown, Mass., and her partner, Ellen Freeman; two brothers, Patrick and Dominic Donofrio; two sisters, Lena Latorre and Grace Sanandres; eight grandchildren, along with three of their spouses; and five great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Denis Church, Manasquan, followed by burial at Ocean County Memorial Park, Toms River. The O'Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township, was in charge of arrangements.

Charles Van Schoick Jr.

Charles "Buster" W. Van Schoick Jr., 88, of Howell, died Jan. 28, 2007, at Sunrise Assisted Living of Lincroft. He was a lifelong resident of Howell. Before his retirement in 1975, Mr. Van Schoick was a dairy farmer and also grew sweet corn. He was a founding member of the Squankum Star Club and was an avid hunter. He was predeceased by a son, Ronald Lee Van Schoick, in 1943. Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Elizabeth Van Schoick of Howell; a son, Charles W. Van Schoick III of Howell; two daughters, Marie E. Miller of Howell and Sandra M. Schrieder of Jackson; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Harriet Guice of Brick. Services were held at Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, Freehold Township, followed by interment in Evergreen Cemetery, Farmingdale. Memorial contributions may be made to Squankum United Methodist Church, 45 Old Tavern Road, Howell 07731.

Mary Cherry Schleifer

Mrs. Schleifer, 76, of East Brunswick, died June 27, 2007, in Ocean Medical Center, Brick. She was predeceased by her husband, James H. Schleifer. Surviving are two sons, James E., and his wife, Reyne, of Princeton Junction, and Richard J., and his wife, Chantelle, of Brick; a daughter, Barbara Fischer, and her husband, Mark, of Old Bridge; two brothers, John D. Cherry of Asbury Park and Robert Cherry of California; and eight grandchildren. A Mass was offered at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Old Bridge. Cremation was private.
