Two injured in icy crash
BRICK TOWNSHIP - Weather appears to have been a factor in a recent three-car accident on the icy Brielle Bridge that left two people injured.
Michael W. Dohrenwend, 49, Toms River, was traveling westbound in the left lane on Route 70 over the bridge at 2:22 p.m. on Feb. 14., police said.
Dohrenwend lost control of his 2002 Toyota pickup on icy pavement as he crested the bridge and crossed the center median into the left-bound lane. His truck spun around, then collided with a 1995 Ford Explorer driven by Margaret Gutches, 88, Brick. Gutches was traveling eastbound on the bridge in the right lane, police said.
Dohrenwend's truck continued to spin around after the impact with Gutches' car, then struck the front of a 1991 Honda Accord driven by Elsayed A. Aboyoussef, 76, Lakewood.
The pickup finally came to a stop after it struck the bridge's guard rail, police said.
Members of the Brielle Fire Department extricated Dohrenwend from his truck. He was taken to the Jersey Shore University Medical Center's trauma unit in Neptune with shoulder and internal injuries. Gutches was taken to the Ocean Medical Center by the Herbertsville First Aid Squad for treatment of back and neck pain. Aboyoussef was uninjured, police said.
The accident is under investigation by patrolmen Jay Lampiasi and Jeffrey Lindquist, and Sgt. Donald Ling of the police department's traffic safety unit.
