Brick woman badly injured in Rt. 88 crash BY PATRICIA A. MILLER Staff Writer
BRICK TOWNSHIP - A local woman was seriously injured in a head-on collision on Route 88 recently, police said.
Clotelle St. John, 50, suffered multiple compound fractures of both legs in the accident, which happened at 11:17 p.m. on March 23, about 80 feet west of Burnt Bridge Avenue, police said.
St. John was traveling west on Route 88 in her 2003 Nissan Altima when her car was struck by a 1996 Jeep Cherokee driven by Erin Sullivan, 20, Point Pleasant, police said.
Sullivan, who was traveling eastbound on Route 88, failed to maintain her lane and crossed over into the westbound lane, where her car collided with St. John's, police said.
Sullivan told police she started to doze off just before the crash, according to the police report.
St. John, who was trapped in her car, had to be extricated by the Laurelton Fire Company. She was transported to Beaver Dam Park, where she was airlifted by MONOC to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, police said.
Sullivan and her passenger, neither of whom wore seat belts, were taken to Ocean Medical Center in Brick to be treated for minor injuries. Police said there was no indication she was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident.
The state Department of Transportation responded and helped police divert traffic for roughly two hours. The Herbertsville First Aid Squad, Brick First Aid Squad and MONOC paramedics also responded.
The accident is under investigation by Patrolmen Jay Lampiasi and Jeffrey Lindquist of the police department's traffic safety unit. Charges are pending once the investigation is completed, police said.
