Shade Tree Commission to provide Arbor Day kits

The Brick Township Shade Tree Commission will be supplying each of Brick Township's 13 public schools with Arbor Day Kits. Each kit consists of four seeding trees, which have been growing in the commission's care, planting instructions and an Arbor Day guidebook.

"These kits will encourage young people to be more mindful of the environment and the critical role trees play in our daily lives," said Shade Tree Commission Chairwoman Dorothy LaPosa.

Arbor Day has been celebrated in the United States since 1872. It is celebrated on the last Friday in April and a customary observance is to plant trees. Arbor Day will be celebrated April 27. The kits will be distributed by April 15.

The Arbor Day Kit Distribution will help Brick Township maintain its status as a Tree City USA, a designation the township received in 2006. Brick Township met the four standards to become a Tree City USA: a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive forestry program and an Arbor Day observance.

The Brick Township Shade Tree Commission is a five-member volunteer board that was created for the regulation, planting, care and control of shade and ornamental trees and shrubbery upon and in the streets, highways, public places, parks and parkways of the municipality.
