BTHS carnival kicks off with a splash this week
Event marks the beginning of a year-long celebration of high school's 50 years

BRICK TOWNSHIP - Here's your chance to tell your local politicians what you really think of them.

Both Democratic Mayor Daniel J. Kelly and Republican Council President Stephen C. Acropolis will be donning bathing suits and subjecting themselves to a "dunk tank" on July 11, the opening day of a four-day carnival to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Brick Township High School.

"I'm planning on being there and having a good time," Acropolis said. "I'll have on a pair of board shorts."

The mayor is planning on wearing swimming attire, but has nixed anything connected with a Speedo bathing suit.

"The last time I wore a Speedo, Custer was a cadet," Kelly joked. "I'm going to wear something from about 1758."

The carnival will run from 6 to 11 p.m. on July 11, 12 and 13, and from 2 to 11 p.m. on July 14 in the west parking lot at the high school on Chambers Bridge Road.

Acropolis is hoping the dunking will start sometime soon after the opening ceremonies. The event will feature 17 gaming booths, rides for all ages, food, local bands each night and even a "Brick Idol" contest on one of the nights.

The Brick Dragons Pop Warner organization will run a concession booth.

There is no entrance fee for the event. People can buy tickets to go on the rides and play the games, Brick Township High School Principal Dennis Filippone has said.

The carnival is part of a year-long list of events to celebrate the high school's beginnings in 1958. Filippone is hoping to drum up some graduate memories during the carnival that can be used in a book that will capture each of the school's 50 years.

The book is being compiled by longtime BTHS football coach, teacher and administrator Warren Wolf. The book will also feature graduation shots of anyone who ever earned a diploma.

Anyone who wants to share in the book can e-mail Wolf at warrenwolf07@comcast.net, Filippone at dfilippone@ brickschools.org or Assistant Principal William Kleisser at wkleisser@brickschools.org.
