Lampman gets tenure with her reappointment
BY PATRICIA A. MILLER Staff Writer

BRICK TOWNSHIP - Township Council members planned to reappoint Township Clerk Virginia Lampman at the Oct. 23 council meeting.

Lampman, 58, has served as Township Clerk since 2004. She was assistant township clerk prior to that. She began work for the township 26 years ago as a clerk typist.

"I didn't ask this time," she said. "I didn't throw my hat in the ring. I just thought it would be business as usual and it would be a political appointment. I was asked by the council. I was thrilled."

Lampman was bypassed back in 2000 when the then-Township Council picked George Cevasco instead. Cevasco was not certified as a registered municipal clerk.

She served as interim mayor from Dec. 8 through Jan. 4, following former Mayor Joseph C. Scarpelli's resignation. Scarpelli named her as his replacement in his Dec. 8 resignation letter.

Lampman was at the center of a controversy over professional appointments she made while mayor on New Year's Day.

Democratic Mayor Daniel J. Kelly said when he was appointed to replace Scarpelli on Jan. 4 that he thought the appointments were his to make.

He later challenged the legality of the appointments in court, but Superior Court Judge Frank A. Buczynski later ruled the appointments were valid.

Her reappointment as clerk means Lampman has tenure.

"It's nice to be appreciated," she said.

Lampman's base salary is $93,000, but she makes $102,000 with the 9 percent longevity she has accrued over 26 years.
