Officer involved in car fatality back at work
BY DANIELLE MEDINA Correspondent

BRICK TOWNSHIP - The on-duty township police officer who struck and killed a pedestrian on Chambers Bridge Road on Oct. 15 has returned to work, police officials said.

Scott Smith, 24, was en route to a nonemergency call when his police cruiser struck Forge Pond Apartment resident William Gregson, 74, who was attempting to cross the street in the middle of the block.

Smith was placed on administrative leave immediately following the accident, said Capt. John Rein of the Brick Police Department.

"It's typical to allow someone who was involved in a traumatic event time to recover and collect their thoughts," Rein said. "An accident like this one is very traumatic for any driver."

Smith returned to work on Oct. 22, Rein said.

"He's doing fine," said Rein.

Capt. Michael Mohel of the Ocean County Prosecutors Office said the accident was still under investigation. He expects the investigation to be finished by the middle of the month. The Brick Township Police Department is also conducting an internal investigation.

Smith was on patrol and driving southbound on Chambers Bridge Road at 7:46 p.m. on Oct. 15 when he hit Gregson, who was dressed in dark clothing and crossing the street in the middle of the block at 150 Chambers Bridge Road, Lt. John Mount of the Prosecutor's Office's Vehicular Homicide Unit.

The police cruiser's lights were not flashing and the siren was not on because Smith was en route to a nonemergency call, Mohel has said.

Dr. Joseph Domanski of the Ocean County Medical Examiner's Office pronounced Gregson dead at the scene. Smith was taken to Ocean Medical Center, Brick, for treatment of minor injuries, Mohel has said.
