Man dies trying to cross Chambers Bridge in dark Second nighttime pedestrian fatality in less than a month BY PATRICIA A. MILLER Staff Writer
BRICK TOWNSHIP - A 69-year-old township man was killed when he was struck by a car as he tried to cross Chambers Bridge Road in an electric wheelchair in the dark recently.
Henry A. Genovese Jr. was riding in the marked crosswalk at 8:17 p.m. on Nov. 12 near Ovation Way when he attempted to cross against the traffic light, police said.
He was struck by a car driven by Patrick J. Judge, 48, Allenwood. Judge was traveling south on Chambers Bridge Road in the right lane near Ovation Way. Witnesses to the accident said car traffic on Chambers Bridge Road had a green light at the time of the accident. They also told police that Judge tried to swerve to avoid striking Genovese, police said.
Genovese was ejected from the wheelchair from the impact and suffered chest and internal trauma, police said.
He was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center's trauma unit in Neptune by the Brick Township Police EMS Unit. He died in the early morning hours of Nov. 13, police said.
It was the second fatality in less than a month on Chambers Bridge Road where a person attempted to cross the highway in the dark.
William Gregson, 74, was killed on Oct. 15, as he tried to cross the road at 7:46 p.m. Gregson was struck by a township police cruiser driven by Patrolman Scott Smith, 24.
Smith was on patrol and driving southbound on Chambers Bridge when he hit Gregson, who was dressed in dark clothing. Gregson tried to cross the street in the area of 150 Chambers Bridge Road, police said.
Smith was en route to a nonemergency call at the time of the accident. The accident is under investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.
