      Mat Rats to compete in all-star meet

      Four wrestlers who enjoyed outstanding seasons for the Brick Recreation Mat Rats and Lake Riviera Middle School programs will compete in an all-star meet on Thursday night thisweek at BrearleyRegional inKenilworth starting at 6 p.m.

      The competitors include JoeGhione,who won all 46 bouts he wrestled at 60 pounds this season; BrianMatthews (74); Vin Favia (126), whose only loss in 50 bouts came in the finals of the Jersey Shore Junior Wrestling League finals for the Mat Rats; and Jesse Lyon (177).

      Ghione included the Jersey Shore Junior League title and first in a state qualifier at Toms River with championships for Lake Riviera the Ocean County and Tri-County and Howell Christmas tournaments.

      Matthews placed second in the Jersey Shore League for theMatRats andwas runner up in the Ocean County meet for Lake Riviera aswell as second in the Brawl at the Beach Christmas Tournament at Point Pleasant Beach and the Roselle Park Tournament. He is 38-10 on the season.

      Favia won county and tricounty titles as well as the Roselle Park and Brawl at the Beach tournaments.Hewas a first-place finisher at the state qualifiers in Toms River and won all three bouts for Lake Riviera in a state tournament in which the school finished in third place.

      Lyon also won all three bouts in that competition and was a top state qualifier as well as two-time Ocean County and Tri- County champ. He also was second in the Brawl at theBeach in a 49-3 season andwon the Jersey Shore title in his weight class for theMat Rats after finishing in second place last year.

      Lake Riviera head coach Paul Panuska is head coach for the four wrestlers in this competition.
