      Steve Santos knew this had the makings of a special season for himself as a state runner-up and his Brick Memorial wrestling teammates. But he often was at his best when he was losing. "He [coachDanO'Cone] told us at the beginning of the season that this can be a great season and we can accomplish a lot, but we have to do it ourselves," Santos said.

      For the third straight year, Rutgers senior Essence Carson was named the Big East Defensive Player of the Year the conference announced at the annual awards banquet on Friday evening. This is the fourth straight season a Scarlet Knight has won the top defensive league award, as voted on by the head coaches.
