      Memorial DMR, discus squads set school records

      Brick Memorial's boys set two school records in the Ocean County outdoor track and field championships at Southern Regional on Friday night.

      The distancemedleywas third in 10:39.5, far exceeding its previous mark of 10:52 set in last year'smeet. Skipping the sprintmedley to focus on this event, the Mustangs got a great anchor leg from Andrew Brodeur, who covered the 1,600 meters in 4:18.2. Brodeur,whowas third in theNJSIAAMeet of Champions indoors 3,200 in March, took the baton in sixth place before moving up. Brodeur will run for Duke starting this fall.

      "That (time)was great for us because two of our legs were flat," said coach Brian Decker. "If they allwere on, theywould have clocked a 10:32 or 10:33 and maybe had a shot at winning it."

      George Cook ran a 3:21.6 in the 1,200 meters, Kyle Haggerty was timed in a :54.4 in the 400 meters, and Joe Kocher ran a 2:05.3 800.

      Also setting a school record was the discus relay which was fifth in 351 feet, 2 inches, led by Chris Callahan's 125-2. Justin Ernst threw 118-2 and Sean Yuenginger reached 105-8.

      Bill Brunner threw the shot put 49-4 1/2 as that relay was fourth with a combined distance of 132-11 1/4. Taylor Calise nailed a 43-7 and Sean Howard tabulated a 39-11 3/4.

      The Brick teams will compete in the Ocean County championships on Thursday and Saturday at Neptune High School.

      As for the younger competitors, Brick Memorial'sNick Castellanoswas named the Most Valuable Player of the freshman segment of the freshman/sophomore championships at Barnegat on Saturday when he won the 1,600-meter run in 4:46.55,was second in the 3,200 in 10:39 behind teammate Andrew Goelz's 10:38.37 and was fourth in the 800 meters in 2:10.2. John Reibert had the second best throw in the discus at 118- feet, 6-inches and was sixth in the shot put in 33-4. Their efforts helped the Mustangs finish in sixth place in the team standings.

      As for the sophomore segment, Steve Spanola was a runner-up in the javelin at 126-2 and John Vaguerio was third in the high jump at 5-foot-8.
