Lakewood man charged with assaulting cop

BRICK TOWNSHIP - Police arrested a Lakewood man recently and charged him with aggravated assault on a police officer and making false 911 calls.

HermannWinkelmann, 66, was also charged with driving under the influence, obstructing the administration of the law, possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle and reckless driving on May 14, police said.

Police received a transferred 911 call from the Ocean County Sheriff 's Department at 8:46 p.m. The call was made from the parking lot of the Bally Total Fitness on Chambers Bridge Road, police said.

When police arrived, they found Winkelmann in his gray Toyota screaming, according to the police report.

Police ordered Winkelmann to exit the car a number of times. He got out, then attempted to get back into his car. Officers were able to handcuff him. When Winkelmann asked Patrolman Jason Matthews to fix his eyeglasses, Matthews tried to adjust them and Winkelmann lunged toward the officer and attempted to bite him several times, according to the police report.

Jersey Shore Animal Center representatives arrived on the scene and took custody of Winkelmann's German shepherd, police said.

Police transported Winkelmann to the Ocean Medical Center on Jack Martin Boulevard. He continued to scream at officers on the way to the hospital, according to the police report.
