SOS group is definitely political, reader says

Once again, the Brick Township Democrats have put politics and party before community, and this time it is very likely that they are going to cost us a community center.

The group that is collecting signatures to put the community center plans on the ballot claims they are nonpartisan. Nothing could be further from the truth. Of the group's founders, one is the former Democratic municipal chairman who was appointed township clerk with no previous experience and another is the webmaster for the former Democratic mayor's campaign last year. Another founder is a member of the Democratic County Committee. This group is clearly a political group.

It is truly disappointing that Councilwoman Kathy Russell is actively taking part in the petition drive. Councilwoman Russell has served on the council for 12 years and this is the first time that she has asked for a referendum on a township project. Why? What is different about this project and this year than any of her previous years on the council? The answer is simple. The mayor is no longer one of her Democratic colleagues.

It is a sad day when people no longer consider the good of the community their primary objective. There is no doubt that Brick Township would benefit from having a community center. That is why there have been plans to make one in Brick for almost a decade. It is too bad that the Democrats in Brick and their mouthpiece, Councilwoman Russell, have flip-flopped on this issue after supporting a community center for so many years.
