      Township hockey fanatics await fate of Ice Palace
            Some of the Brick township hockey community expressed some concern when negotiations fell through by the township for the purchase of the Ocean Ice Palace. Recent media reports indicate that owner Joan Dwulet decided to abandon the proposed purchase of the 13-acre parcel that would include the ice arena built in 1962.

      Township's Little League program off to a great start
            Brick Township again has a new link with Little League. An 18-team program with 300 kids from ages 5 to 13 played games as a franchise with the national headquarters in Williamsport, Pa., including four teams in the Little League Majors for 10-12-year-olds, four teams in the Minor League, and 10 in a coach-pitch program.

            The excitement continues for Brick Memorial varsity baseball coach Rich Bishop. Bishop's American Legion summer baseball team split two games, including a 7-6 victory over state tournament sectional champion Toms River North.

            The Monmouth University Department of Athletics, in conjunction with head women's basketball coach Stephanie Gaitley, announces the formation of "Gaitley's Gang," a kids' club for boys and girls in eighth grade and under. The goal of "Gaitley's Gang" is to have the largest and loudest kids' club in the Northeast Conference.

      Poplaski places eighth in all-around gymnastics event
      Brick Twp. gymnast will attend Towson next year
            Lindsay Poplaski, a victim of repeated hard luck in gymnastics, finally competed without a hindrance and seized the opportunity. Poplaski last month in the National High School Gymnastics championships in St. Petersburg, Fla. finished third in her signature balance beam routine with a 9.6 score and was eighth in the all-around out of around 100 contestants in 36.875.

      Mets once again come out on top in Cal Ripken League
            The Mets again wear the crown of the Brick American youth baseball league. With the program switching from Little League to Cal Ripken for this season, the Mets have won four of the last five titles and wrapped up their second straight title early last week with an 11-7 victory over the Brewers in the final game of their best-of-three series.
