Reader's opinion of Kathy Russell has faltered

If one shows respect towards another, it is given, but only after the first party earns it.

I had a lot of respect at one time for Brick Councilwoman Cathy Russell, but these past few weeks it has diminished to an all-time low.

At one time, I considered Ms. Russell to be the epitome of honesty and political virtue. This has changed. In my opinion, Ms. Russell has collected signatures for a referendum with an ulterior political meaning that stated "stop the sale" instead of just requiring a vote by all taxpayers, has lowered herself to being a Democratic "street fighter," casting off proper political protocol for the good of discrediting our mayor and council. The use of political language was and is paramount concerning this issue. She was wrong to get involved - bad politics.

This elected councilwoman has also taken the issue of an unpaid interest bill of approximately $88,000 from former Democratic Mayor Dan Newman Sr. and asked that it be closed or thrown out. No cigar here Cathy, you have demonstrated once again that you have put party politics above our township. This is a no-no, and you will be remembered for it. My respect for you is dwindling by leaps and bounds.

Lastly, on July 8, at the council meeting on the beach, Councilman Tony Matthew issued a statement condemning your past remarks about him to be false, as witnessed by the council secretary. Words that you uttered at a former meeting were not true and were proven false by a records check. You have failed severely and lowered yourself for all to see and hear. At one time, I could have voted for you, but now you have fallen and I can only say, God bless you.
