Girl slightly injured after car ends up in bay

BRICK TOWNSHP - Police are trying to determine how a car driven by a 16-year-old Brick female ended up in Barnegat Bay on July 15.

The accident took place at 1:09 p.m., just west of the Mantoloking Bridge at the Hinckley Boat Basin on Mantoloking Road, according to the police report.

The girl was traveling eastbound on Mantoloking Road near the bridge when the car accelerated, left the roadway, struck a curb and went through a fence on the boat basin property, the police report states.

The car then struck a personal watercraft trailer, then "vaulted" out into the bay. It landed 50 to 100 feet from the shoreline, then sank in about 4 feet of water, according to the police report.

The juvenile was able to exit the car and return to shore, where she was treated for minor injuries by the Brick Police EMS. She was then taken to Ocean Medical Center on Jack Martin Boulevard, police said.

Divers from the Brick Township Underwater Recovery/Dive Team responded to make certain there were no other passengers in the car or the water.

Brick police officers, the New Jersey State Police Marine Unit, the U.S. Coast Guard, Breton Woods Fire Company, Pioneer Fire Company and the dive team responded.

Charges are pending until the investigation is complete, police said.
