      Hawks picked to finish second in NEC football
            Northeast Conference football coaches voted for experience. Even though the Monmouth University football team was 4-6 overall last fall and 3-3 in the NEC, the conference coaches picked coach Kevin Callahan's squad to finish second behind Albany. The Hawks have returned nine starters on the offense and 10 on defense.

            Brick American's 11-year-old Cal Ripken All-Stars are savoring something never before won by the league — a regional championship. After an up-and-down start in pool play, Brick American pulled it together in a 16-1 semifinal rout of New Paltz, N.Y.

      Softball coach leaving school to take administrative position
            Vin Dallicardillo, who developed some outstanding softball players and teams at Brick Memorial in eight seasons as head coach, and served as a football assistant there, is resigning to take an administrative position at Shore Regional.

      Monmouth University Roundup
            The Monmouth University football team completed their first of two scrimmages for the 2008 preseason on Saturday, Aug. 16 at Kessler Field. The Hawks were split into the White (offense) and Blue (defense) squads, and alternated playing between the first, second, third and fourth teams.

      Memorial girls soccer hoping for another playoff run in '08
            Amanda Simon started two-a-day practices with Brick Memorial's girls soccer team while carrying a rare distinction in the program: she is launching her third season as the starting goalie. The last three-year starter is her current goalie coach on the varsity, Lauren Acosta, who played her final season in 2002 before embarking on a career at Rutgers University.

      Dragon Pee Wees hope for another solid gridiron season
            The Brick Dragons Junior Pee Wee Green team did not allow a point all season while winning the Jersey Shore B South Division and the league playoffs, until falling in the regional playoffs to the Hunterdon Huskies. About half of the team has moved up to the Pee Wees with their coach, Kevin Matthews, who also is the program's commissioner.

      Testa already making big moves as a professional
      Promoted to top level of A-ball in Minnesota Twins farm system
            Joe Testa, a Brick native residing in Jackson, wasted no time in leaving a good impression with the Minnesota Twins' Fort Myers team in the Gulf Coast Rookie League. It earned the left-handed pitcher a promotion to the Fort Myers Miracle, a High-A team in the Florida State League.
