Pitch in for energy awareness, conservation

With all the environmental issues facing the world today, most of us think at one point "What can I do to help?" If every individual did his or her part, we can shape a better future for our children. Every bit of effort helps. Here are ways you can pitch in for energy awareness and environmental conservation:

      • Start at home — it's where you live, day in and day out. Home is the best place to start. Make your home energy efficient. Replace all ordinary bulbs with fluorescent energy saving bulbs (do invest in a reliable brand, not all fluorescent bulbs work the same way so don't fall for cheap, ineffective ones). If you use a heater or an air conditioner, make sure there are no air vents for the heat or coolness to escape

      • Load your washing machine to its full capacity each time. If you must wash a few articles at a time, use the "economy" option to avoid wasting water. Go easy on the detergent because it may contain strong chemicals that harm the environment

      • Organize or get involved in clean up efforts. You can start with your block or the neighborhood. When a lot of people get together, it becomes a social activity and even a fun exercise. You'll accomplish more when you work together. It won't even seem like work

      • Maintain a green garden. If you can grow any vegetables and fruits in your garden, it's ideal. If not, at least support local farmers and buy organic produce if you don't have a lawn, try to keep some potted plants. Plants and trees not only absorb carbon dioxide and other harmful gases during the day, they are a treat for the eyes. Plus they release moisture to the air. Trees offer shade and coolness

      • Opt for the shower instead of bathtubs. Don't leave the tap running when you brush your teeth. Simple things, but these habits are common and cause wastage on the long run

      • Limit your visits to fast food restaurants. This will save you fuel and help minimize the pollution in the air

      • Switch off lights when not needed, turn off fans and ceiling fans when you are not in the room. Unplug your TV, radio, cell phone chargers or computer so that electricity is not used up when you are not using these appliances.
