      Reader offers two quick ways to cut town's costs
            Ihave been saddened to read all the recent articles pertaining to possible layoffs in Brick. I personally feel that if you lay off workers, it creates financial hardships on the workers, their families and the rest of the taxpayers. (Let's not forget these workers live in Brick and are taxpayers too.) Services in the town will no doubt suffer as well.

      Call it a Christmas tree, not a holiday tree
            This is only the second time I have written a letter to the editor. Once again, it is something I feel strongly about, the township's "Holiday Tree." I am formally requesting that the tree be referred to by its true designation, a Christmas tree.

      Democrat questions some township legal fees
            Mayor Steve Acropolis has stated that he may have to lay off 50 township employees, but if he looked at some of his own spending maybe that wouldn't be necessary. In 2006 the legal fees for the township attorney totaled $184,000. With the appointment of the law firm of Gilmore and Monahan to township attorney in 2007, the legal fees paid to that firm totaled $250,000.

      Leaders need to address retirement crisis
            The flaws of our retirement system are easy to spot these days. People who worked hard and saved diligently are postponing retirement. Some retirees are returning to work. Others are dipping into their savings early. Most people have not been able to save enough money to retire comfortably in the first place.
