Referendum needed for Oyster Creek's future The only real tool the people of Ocean County have to shut down the nuclear power plant is the mechanism called referendum. It prevented mass burn incineration from being built. But the organized alleged opposition to the continuation of nuclear power at Oyster Creek remains strangely silent as to the powerful tool of referendum, even after I publicly called for its use at numerous Ocean County Freeholder meetings over a period of many months. Three options for referendum were presented to the Freeholders: the first option was for the Freeholders to challenge legal precedent and place it on the county ballot. ("No" was their response.) The second option was for them to call upon the Asbury Park Press to conduct a county ballot using the newspaper. ("No" was their response.) The third option was for them to call upon the state Legislature to enact special legislation allowing for a special referendum for the people of Ocean County. ("No" was their response.) During the Vietnam War, the phony anti-war and phony anti-draft groups were created by our government in an attempt to neutralize and control opposition to the war. In our government's push for nuclear power, are we again faced with phony opposition groups? Ray Kalainikas Manalapan |
