      Auriemma makes it to 1,000 games behind the bench
      BTHS hockey coach wins, 9-0, last week
            Brick Township hockey over the years has been a family affair, with many players on the team grandsons and grandnephews of Bob Auriemma, who has coached the team since 1965, including his 1,000th game last week, a 9-0 victory over Toms River East. This year's team features three descendants of Auriemma.

      Stuto off to a good start this winter
      Shot putter among state's best, committed to Eastern Michigan University
            Lisa Stuto of Brick Township, who has succeeded graduate teammate DeAnne Hahn as the queen of New Jersey shot putters, got one burden out of her way when she gave a verbal commitment to Eastern Michigan. It's a nice fit," said coach Bill Brunner of the Mid- American Conference school.

      Mustangs still to face Township, Toms River North in dual meets
            Brick Memorial's boys swim team was optimistic about this season. But a 7-0 start? "I knew we'd have a good team but not like this. It's a pleasant surprise," said coach Don McCarrick in understatement as his team prepares for the Ocean County championships on Friday night at the Toms River YMCA.

      Mat Rats I splits in weekend action
            Jon Ghione at 60 pounds, Dan Rackliffe at 72 and Dan Wojtaszek at 130 remained unbeaten, but the Brick Recreation Mat Rats I team split a pair of double-dual matches in the Jersey Shore Junior Wrestling League, nosing out Toms River, 44-42, but losing to Jackson, 52-37, on Saturday at Toms River.

      Township boys to host bowling tourney
            Brick Township boys will look to maintain their dominance of the Brick Bowling Tournament when action gets under way on Saturday morning at Ocean Lanes. Coming into this week, there are 64 teams entered with more expected to come aboard in the days ahead. There are 38 boys teams and 26 girls teams, and as many as 84 teams can be accommodated.

            The Twin County Soccer Association Liberty Girls U12 soccer team took first place in the National 2 division of the Monmouth-Ocean Soccer Association for the Fall 2008 season. Coach John Underwood credits the girls' positive attitudes and teamwork for their success.
