Brick Recreation Mat Rats I look to defend its War at the Shore title on Sunday at Veterans Memorial Middle School when it takes on seven challengers, including Mat Rats II, Hazlet, Washington Township, Paulsboro, Nutley, Long Branch and Morris Knolls.

      It looks like a long season for high school basketball in Brick, but no one is complaining. Brick Memorial's girls for the first time made the NJSIAA tournament and join the school's boys team after both made it last week, well before the Feb. 7 cutoff.

Hockey teams on cusp of qualifying for states
Cutoff date is Feb. 15

      Brick Township and Brick Memorial hockey continued to stay well in the hunt for a state tournament berth, but both had their struggles last week. Brick Township on Saturday fell to St. John Vianney, 3-2, when Brett Steinberg scored his second goal of the game just beyond Green Dragons goalie Ed Rafferty to fall to 7-5-2.
