      Brick Memorial edged out in Handchen finals
            Cinderella apparently found the glass slipper, as Middletown South nosed out Brick Memorial, 4-3, in the Handchen Cup final on Friday night at the Red Bank Armory. "They were truly a Cinderella story," Brick Memorial coach Chip Bruce said, referring to Middletown South. "They won two regular-season games and then came on at the end.

            The Midget Majors AA team again was the last team playing into the postseason out of the Brick Hockey Club on Saturday night, when it was eliminated in the USA Hockey Atlantic District, 7-5, by the Quakers from West Chester, Pa., at Aston, Pa.

      Mat Rats lose to Jackson, but Matt Moore still unbeaten
            And then there was one. Many wrestlers have enjoyed fine seasons for the Brick Recreation Mat Rats wrestling program, 15 of them competing in the state finals March 15 and March 22 at the Dunn Center in Elizabeth. But only one has not yet suffered a loss — 140-pounder Matt Moore.

      Bandejas now a powerhouse in Brick Township wrestling
            Ayear ago, Ricky Bandejas was wrestling primarily on junior varsity but picked up four wins wrestling behind Corey Rackliffe at 103 pounds last season on Brick Township High School's team. "Cross country and track and field was my No. 1 sport," Bandejas said.

            Jay Frank, a Brick Memorial graduate, was named to the 2008-2009 New Jersey Athletic Conference All-Star First Team. A junior at The College of New Jersey, he is co-captain of the men's basketball team. Frank finished the 2008- 2009 campaign with a career-best effort having led the team with his 393 points, good enough for a 15.

            Unbeaten Brick Memorial High School wrestler Steve Santos said he has "bigger goals," and Mike Morales said it's "not over yet," following their Region 6 title wins. Both athletes are now gearing up for the NJSIAA wrestling championships.

      Brick Memorial heads for Fort Pierce, Fla.
            Although it was definitely still winter earlier this week, athletes across the state were thinking ahead to Friday, when they begin spring practice. For the Brick Memorial High School baseball team, that includes a trip next month to Fort Pierce, Fla.
