Art contest to focus on parents and teens The New Jersey Department of Human Services (NJDHS) invites teens across the state to participate in its 14th annual Teen Media Contest sponsored by the Division of Family Development, focusing on parental responsibility. The statewide contest is open to New Jersey middle school and high school students. "Depict how your parent(s) is a champion/ hero to you" is the theme of this year's contest. Students should hand draw submissions illustrating a parent's inspiring actions. For example, a submission could illustrate a commitment to community service, helping with homework, or simply a parent staying by a child's side when they are sick. "Since 1995, the New Jersey Department of Human Services has given teens a reason to think about their own parents to understand the emotional and financial commitment it takes to be a parent," said Jeanette Page- Hawkins, director of the Division of Family Development. "But most importantly, the annual event brings young people's attention to the realities of teen parenting and how it would impact their dreams." All entries must be postmarked no later than April 3. Staff from the Division of Family Development and its Office of Child Support Services will judge the contest. Winners will receive U.S. savings bonds and certificates of achievement during a springtime awards ceremony. Winning submissions along with additional student entries will be featured in the annual child support calendar, which is distributed to all middle schools and high schools in New Jersey.
