      Rotary will host wine and cheese fundraiser
            The Brick Township Rotary Club will host a Taste of Spring wine and cheese tasting event May 4 at the Woodlake County Club, Lakewood. The event will benefit 14 local charities including POAC, Dottie's House and the Boy Scouts of America.

      Retired educators to meet May 14
            The Ocean County Retired Educators Association will host its spring meeting and luncheon at the Quality Inn, Toms River, at 11 a.m. May 14. Current members will have the opportunity to vote for OCREA officers during the election period following the business meeting. The cost of the luncheon is $22 per person and reservations must be received by May 5.

            A gift auction and luncheon hosted by Brick Memorial High School Project Graduation 2009 will be held noon to 5 p.m. May 3 at Veteran's Memorial Middle School, 105 Hendrickson Ave. Drawings will begin at 1:30 p.m. Admission is $15 and includes lunch, dessert, soda, coffee and tea.

            The Brick Garden Club will meet 7 p.m. May 11 in the Cultural Arts Center, Herbertsville Road, Brick. Lee Crisci, president, will conduct a short business meeting to discuss upcoming events and trips for the club. The committees for the annual garden tour will also give reports.

            Auditions for "Shakespeare Under the Stars" will be held at 3 p.m. May 3 and at 10 a.m. May 23 at the Cultural Arts Center, 515 Herbertsville Road, Brick. Shakespeare enthusiasts, from novice to student to veteran, are welcome to come prepared with a selection to perform.

      Enjoy 'Pops & Pasta' at Brick Twp. H.S.
            The Brick Township High School chorus, under the direction of Paul Bibelheimer, will present its ninth annual "Pops and Pasta" on May 8 at the high school, 346 Chambers Bridge Road. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. and will feature pasta, meatballs, rolls, salad, drinks and dessert. The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium.

      Parking permits, beach badges on sale
            The Brick Township Recreation Department has announced that season beach badges and season parking permits for summer 2009 are now on sale in the Brick Recreation Department. The price for season badges is $25 if purchased prior to June 15. After that date, the price increases to $30 for season badges.

      'Paws 4 a Cause' will take place May 30
            The eighth annual 'Paws 4 a Cause" dog walk benefiting the homeless animals at the Jersey Shore Animal Center will be held from 1-4 p.m. May 30 at the Ocean County Park, Route 88, Lakewood. The rain date will be June 6. Water stations will be available for humans and canines along the trail. Pets must be licensed, have up-to-date vaccinations and be leashed at all times.

            The second annual Barnegat Bay Celtic festival will be held May 2 at Christ Episcopal Church, 415 Washington St., Toms River. Willie Lynch and his band will be the musical event. Entry forms for non-sanctioned solo bagpipe and solo drum competitions are now being accepted. Forms for Celtic vendors are also available.

            Ocean County College, Toms River, is offering the following day trips. All ages are welcome. • A Philadelphia food tour, 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 28. The fee is $149. • Brooklyn Botanical Garden and Brooklyn Museum guided tour, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. June 25. The fee is $119.

            The Brick Township Recreation Department is accepting applications for summer employment for lifeguards for Brick Township's three ocean beaches. Lifeguards must be 16 or older and certified in CPR (cardio pulmonary resuscitation), first aid, AED (automated external defibrillator) and oxygen.

            Jersey Shore PFLAG will conduct its monthly support group 7-9 p.m. May 13 at the United Church of Christ of Toms River, 1681 Ridgeway Road (Route 571), Manchester. The meetings offer support, education and advocacy for people who have lesbians and gays, bisexuals, transgender and intersex people in their lives. The group is not affiliated with any religious organization.

            The New Jersey Chapter of The Crohns and Colitis Foundation of America will benefit from a night of pro wrestling action to be held at the Brick Elks Lodge, 2491 Hooper Ave. at 7:35 p.m. May 2. The main event will feature Jersey Shore native John "Beach Balls" Mahoney. Also on the bill will be the Ocean County debut of the tag team the Nigerian Nightmares.

            All branches of the Ocean County Library will be closed May 25 in observance of the Memorial Day holiday and will resume normal branch hours on May 26. All branches of the Ocean County Library will be closed on Sundays during the summer.
