Reader slams coach choice and block scheduling Iread this week's Brick Bulletin and your opinion article about Coach Warren Wolf and his replacement and was very surprised to see that so many people have missed the point of this issue. It has become very apparent that our new Superintendent of Schools, Walter J. Hrycenko, is following in the footsteps of his last two predecessors and helping to establish a new tradition in Brick education — arrogance in administration. Too bad about 51 years of football tradition since it went the way of all the parents' protests over block scheduling. We even hired substitute teachers so that the teachers from Brick Memorial could go observe in Neptune. So much for the template held up to be revered at past board meetings about the success at Brick High School. Math scores went up from 67 to 74 in only one semester. Hello? It was a pilot program in effect for one semester with incoming freshman when it was touted as the best thing to happen to a school since the invention of erasers. As a parent, I don't think a 74 is anything to brag about. I would also like to know what the average math score is after not taking any math classes for 8-12 months with the new block scheduling that Mr. Hrycenko has forced upon us. If Brick High School has such a wonderful new program, why did we send our teachers to Neptune? I have three daughters who attend or have attended Brick Memorial High School. I never thought that I would find myself so concerned about the football program at Brick High School. What Mr. Hrycenko has done to Mr. Wolf is inexcusable. A man with 51 years of experience should not even contemplate being ignored. Coaches Zdanowicz and Osborne both deserve more recognition and respect than was shown to them by Mr. Hrycenko. It seems that common courtesy and arrogance in administration don't mix. "The buck stops here," so just be quiet and roll out the red carpet for the "nice guy" with the 2-8 record from Allentown, and seven other schools. Block scheduling is a great thing for your honors students, too.
By the way, did anyone else know that Brick schools aren't good enough for Superintendent of Schools Hrycenko's son? His son goes to Monsignor Donovan. |
