      Homeowners, Hulse House big winners in CDBG grant money

      The 2009 federal Community Development Block Grant money the township recently received will be put to good use, Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis said.

      "We try to give everybody that submits an application something," the mayor said. "We'd like to give them more money. It's an opportunity to help some of the community based and faith-based organizations."

      Brick received a total of $282,147 in federal grant money for 2009. The bulk of the funds will go toward the township's housing rehabilitation program and a historic preservation project at the Hulse House on Herbertsville Road.

      The largest chunk of the CDBG money is going to individual homeowners who meet certain income criteria, Acropolis said.

      "Of all the block grant money we get, 70 percent goes to housing rehabilitation," he said. "Doors, windows, heating systems.
