Four taken to area hospitals after Aug. 1 multiple car crash

BRICK TOWNSHIP — Four people, including a baby, were injured in a five-car crash that closed a section of Burnt Tavern Road for three hours, police said

The accident, which happened at 6:45 p.m. on Aug. 1, is still under investigation by the township police department's traffic safety unit, Capt. John E. Rein Jr. said.

Police were withholding the names of those in the accident until their families could be notified, he said.

Police said a 1998 Saturn SL1 was traveling east on Burnt Tavern Road when the driver lost control and crossed the center grass median, then entered the westbound lanes of traffic.

The Saturn struck a 2002 Chrysler Sebring, which was traveling eastbound on Burnt Tavern. The Saturn then struck a 2006 Toyota Corolla, which was traveling in the right westbound lane. The Saturn then spun around and hit a 1996 Acura Integra, which was traveling behind the Toyota, then spun again and hit a 1998 Jeep Cherokee, which was right behind the Chrysler Sebring. All of the cars came to rest in the westbound lanes of the roadway, police said.

The drivers of the Chrysler and Saturn were transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. The Jeep occupants, a mother and her infant, were taken to Ocean Medical Center in Brick, police said.

The Laurelton and Herbertsville Fire companies, the Herbertsville First Aid Squad, Point Pleasant First Aid Squad and MONOC paramedics responded.

Patrolman Jeffrey Lindquist and Sgt. Donald Lind are conducting the investigation.
