            Brick Township High football players shrugged off what could have been a distraction over the uproar surrounding the appointment of Patrick Dowling as coach for their opening game. Instead, they took control from the start.

      BMHS falls to Sayreville in nail-biter game
            Brick Memorial High School football coach Walt Currie won't point fingers when things go awry. The Mustangs endured a 29-26 loss to visiting Sayreville War Memorial High School in the season opener on the night of Sept. 12, but Currie won't single out Jordan Loiodice, who missed a 34-yard field goal in the closing seconds that would have tied the game.

      Pop Warner Pee Wees, Junior Midgets off to strong start
            Two Brick Dragons football teams have yet to allow a point after three games played in the Jersey Shore Pop Warner Football League. The Pee Wees, who have many players who moved up from the Junior Pee Wee team, did not allow a point during the regular season. The Junior Midgets also have not yielded a point in a 3-0 start.

            Here we are deep in September. Fall is in the air. Children are back to school. The Pop Warner, high school, college and professional football seasons have begun. If all that excitement isn't enough, it is also hurricane season.

      Fall baseball notebook
            Anthony Vitale's timely hitting led a balanced attack and earned him Most Valuable Player honors as Brick National's 9-year-old All-Stars swept all five games in the Battle by the Bay Tournament in Manahawkin over the Labor Day weekend. They defeated Ridley, Del., 5-0, for the championship.

      Sports Shorts
            The 2009 Harold "Hank" Handchen Memorial Golf Tournament, sponsored by the Lions Club of Brick, will be held Sept. 28 at the Lakewood Country Club, Lakewood. The cost for greens fees, cart, lunch credit and dinner is $100. Prizes will be awarded, and sponsorships are still available. Proceeds will be used to fund scholarships for high school students in Brick.

      BTHS girls volleyball team trounces BMHS in opener
            Although Brick Township High School's volleyball team led throughout its 25-16, 25-14 season opening victory over visiting Brick Memorial High School on Sept. 11, coach Christina Conti believes that much more work needs to be done.
