Pop Warner notes Joe Phillips and Matt Gerrity had long touchdown runs from about midfield in the first half, and three other players scored as the Brick Dragons Pee Wees beat the Brick Mustangs, 31-0, to win the Mayor's Trophy game and go to 4-0 in the Jersey Shore Pop Warner League. "We still haven't allowed a point, but we have the next four games closing our season against playoff teams," coach Tom Holland said. The team plays again at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 26 at Hazlet. "That's a huge game," Holland said. "Hazlet was a regional playoff team like these kids were (as Junior Pee Wees last season). This will be like a playoff game. We need to play tight defense." Antonio Garcia at outside linebacker and Nick Tartaglione at nose tackle returned to the defense from injuries and played well along with Al Taronto and Tom Costanza, who made interceptions. But Holland also credited the play of his reserve team that saw a lot of action, especially on the offensive line where they "did a great job blocking." They included Joe Bruno, Tyler Dealmeita, Jack Gleason, John Kozak, James Mead, William Poland, Joseph Revckhill and Cory Wilson. Kyle Wojtazek ran 16 yards for a touchdown in the first half. Costanza ran 40 yards for a touchdown and quarterback Mike Begovich snuck into the end zone from a yard out in the second half. In other Mayor's Trophy action, the Brick Mustangs Midgets beat the Dragons, 18-8 and the Dragons Junior Pee Wees beat the Mustangs 26-6. In the Midgets game, the Dragons struck first on their opening series before the Mustangs answered in the first quarter and broke away in the second half. Rob Triano threw a 65-yard touchdown pass for the go-ahead score to Ronald Johnson, who scored all three touchdowns. His first one was a 20- yard sweep in the opening quarter and the last one was a 12-yard counter play. "We're getting healthier from a lot of injuries," said coach Gerry Spanola, who said his team got a solid, balanced defensive effort, including the return of middle linebacker Nick Costa from an injury. The Mustangs (3-1) bounced back strongly from their first loss of the season in the previous game to Jackson, 28-6. They take on Manalapan at home at 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 26. The Mustang Junior Midgets won 24-12 over Southern. The Dragons Junior Pee Wees Green team beat Manalapan 14-0. |
