            Veterans who have served on active duty since Sept. 11, 2001, can learn about the benefits of the Post-9/11 GI Bill at Ocean County College's Veterans Open House, scheduled for 6 p.m. Nov. 4 at Ocean County College (OCC), College Drive, Toms River. Admission is free.

      Special pets sought for Hall of Fame
            Nominations are now open for the 15th annual Animal Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will take place Feb. 28 during a public awards luncheon at the Hamilton Park Conference Center in Florham Park. For 14 years New Jersey's veterinarians have been honoring special animals that make an indelible impact on the lives of the people around them.

      OCC slates 'Intro to Teaching' program
            Ocean County College (OCC) and New Pathways to Teaching in New Jersey are offering "Introduction to the Teaching Profession 24-Hour Program," a prerequisite from the New Jersey Department of Education for all applications for a certificate of eligibility submitted after Oct. 30, 2009.

      Free batteries for smoke detectors
            In an effort to encourage residents to change the batteries in their smoke detectors when they change their clocks during daylight saving time, the Brick Bureau of Fire Safety and local fire companies will be supplied with a limited number of 9-volt batteries to give away.

      P.T.A. will host Field Yard Sale Nov. 14
            The Herbertsville P.T.A. will host its first Field Yard Sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 14 in the field behind the school at 2282 Lanes Mill Road. A rain date has been set for Nov. 15. A $15 fee will reserve a lawn space that is 12 feet by 12 feet. Only the first 65 vendors will be accepted.

      Country festival takes a step back in time
            An Apple and Pumpkin Festival, hosted by the Ashley Lauren Foundation, will be held 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 7 at Bucks Mills Park, Colts Neck. The rain date is Nov. 14. The event is designed to take guests back in time and enjoy the simple life. For youngsters, there will be hayrides, face painting, pumpkin painting, pony rides and a make-yourown scarecrow.

            Radio personality Bruce "Cousin Brucie" Morrow will be at the Toms River branch of the Ocean County Library, 101 Washington St., 7 p.m. Nov. 13 to discuss the changes that have unfolded in music over the decades.

            Church of the Visitation, 755 Mantoloking Road, Brick, will be offering a soup kitchen at noon in the church auditorium on the third Wednesday of every month. All are welcome. There is no charge.

      Historical Society will host Christmas event
            The Brick Township Historical Society will hold its annual Christmas celebration 6-9 p.m. Dec. 11, and noon-4 p.m. Dec. 13 at its Havens Homestead Museum, 521 Herbertsville Road, Brick. "It's a Cranberry Christmas" will be this year's theme. The homestead will be decorated with a variety of cranberry-colored items.

      BYC will hold dances Nov. 13, Dec. 4, 18
            The Brick Youth Club (BYC) will hold dances for the remainder of the year on Nov. 13, Dec. 4 and Dec. 18. There will be more dances announced soon, going into 2010. Dances are open to middle school students only. All dances begin at 7 p.m. and end at 9:30 p.m. Reservations for dances are necessary and will be taken from the Monday prior to the event through Thursday night.

            The Brick Township High School Parent Teacher Student Association seeks crafters its annual craft fair to be held 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 21. Cost is $40 for a space and there will be a discount for multiple spaces. For an application, call Donna at 732-477-9028. Spaces are limited.

      Greater Media slates Halloween event
            Greater Media radio stations WJRZ-FM (100.1) and WRAT-FM (95.9) will host a Haunted Halloween House Party 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Oct. 31 at Martell's, Point Pleasant Beach. The event is sponsored by Pepsi and will feature live music from Daddy Pop. A fourpack of passes can by won by listening to 95.9 WRAT or signing up at wrat.com.

      Tales of Pine Barrens will be discussed
            The Brick Township Historical Society will hold its next meeting at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 10 at the Herbertsville Firehouse, 601 Herbertsville Road, Brick. Karen Riley of New Egypt, author of the book "Voices in the Pines," will relate true tales of the New Jersey Pine Barrens, an area known for its storytelling legacy. The public is welcome to attend.
