      Mustangs get breather this week to prep for East Brunswick
            Brick Memorial High School's football team gets a break in its schedule this week after losing 37-27, to Howell, the No 1-ranked team in the Shore at home on Oct. 23. And the weekend off may be coming at the right time, according to coach Walt Currie.

            Jay Frank starts the college basketball preseason for The College of New Jersey with another tough break, literally speaking. Two years ago, the former Brick Memorial star guard joined his team a month late because of mononucleosis and last year it was a back injury.

      BTHS gymnastics coach looking forward to SC
            Freshman Amie Bassarab and sophomore Casside Kawa of Brick Township High School qualified for the Shore Conference gymnastic championships coming up on Oct. 31 at the school. Bassarab, who qualified in the all around, has been one of the most consistent performers for the Green Dragons.

      Bliem hoping to rebuild BMHS boys soccer after dismal season
            For the first time in Kevin Bliem's 15 seasons as coach, Brick Memorial High School's boys soccer team saw its season come to an end before November. Although it had some competitive matches, the team finished an uncharacteristic 1-17, with an older but inexperienced lineup. A year ago, the Mustangs missed the Shore Conference for the first time under Bliem.

      Girls soccer team played their hearts out, coach says
            Brick Memorial High School girls soccer coach Bill Caruso called it "absolutely heartbreaking" when his team dropped its Shore Conference Tournament round-of-16 game against unbeaten Colts Neck, 2-1, on Oct. 22. But Caruso hopes his team will bounce back for its NJSIAA opener on Nov. 3.

      Pop Warner teams headed to Shore playoffs this weekend
            All three Brick Dragons Pop Warner teams — Junior Midgets, Pee Wee and Junior Pee Wee White — advanced to the championship games of the Jersey Shore Pop Warner League playoffs after winning opening-round victories last weekend.
